afford it. Maj Gen M.S. Balhara, General Officer Commanding (GOC) said
while talking to media persons at Sharifabad in Badgam district that
the army has received suggestions for providing help to extremely poor
people in this respect. He said that proposal to this effect has been
sent to higher military authorities for approval and if approved, next
year 40-50 poor persons will be sent on Haj pilgrimage on army
expenses. He was speaking at a function to welcome and honour the Hajis
who had returned to the state after performing the Haj. Such a function
is said to be a customary practice every year wherein Hajis are
welcomed, given presents and asked to preach peace and brotherhood in
their respective localities.
Chairman of Hurriyat Conference, Sayed Ali Shah Gilani has strongly
opposed the army’s decision. He said that by financing the Haj expenses
of these poor people, the main objective of security forces is to cover
up the cases of violation of human rights by them.
He said that young men are being killed by these security forces in
fake encounters and there is no abatement in custodial deaths and
crimes against women. He insisted that this is just an attempt to hide
the war crimes of security forces. «
